GEOLOGY – CURIOSITIES

The creation of the island of Milos starts 3 million years ago. Earthquakes and explosions shake the volcanic arcs and the extruded magma solidifies on the earth's surface thus inducing new land formations.
First pumice layers are then formed.

The oldest mineraloid was created 1.5 million years ago in Bombarda, Adamas; a type of naturally occurring glass, the later famous obsidian.

480 thousand years ago: termination of volcanic activity (Fyriplaka-Trachylas).

Parts of new land then emerge from the sea – thus we can still observe volcanic rocks containing fossils of various sea specimens.

Glaronissia: group of small islands to the north of Milos.

Formed by the crystallization of volcanic rock to prismatic structures.

The volcano of Milos still makes itself apparent emitting water and gases thru vents and cones scattered throughout various parts of the island.

Due to continuous tectonic movement the island undergoes constant sinking, causing the submergence of various Neolithic and Historic buildings.
