Discover 11,000 Years of Mining History

The Milos Mining Museum is located in Adamas , the island's tourist and commercial center. The Museum was established and is operating on the initiative and financing of S&B Industrial Minerals S.A. (former Silver & Baryte Ores Mining Co. S.A.)

Construction works begun in 1995 and were completed three years later, when the Museum opened its doors to the public on May 23, 1998.

The Museum's goal is to display and honor Milos mining history and tradition . However, it is also part of the Company's broader policy of supporting and promoting the cultural activity of the island, in the same spirit with which it has created the Pollonia Cultural Center and the Milos Conference Center “George Eliopoulos”.

The building comprises the ground floor and upper floors –the main exhibition areas- and the auxiliary areas of the basement.

Various objects, pictures and photographic material illustrate the impressive geological formations of Milos and portray the mining history and tradition of the island, while honoring all those who have worked and continue to work for the development of the island's mining activity, and connecting the past with the future.

On the ground floor , the visitor has his first encounter with the mining history and activity of Milos. A series of photographs, illustrations and charts depict the different stages of the mining process. The presentation is supported by older and up-to-date geological and topographical maps of the island, along with displays of mining tools and instruments . There are also illustrations of present-day mining activity and the environmental rehabilitation projects that are carried out.

The hall on the upper floor is given over to an exhibition of Milos' mineral wealth . Also, samples of minerals that are mainly extracted today and are displayed in glass cases accompanied by photographic material and information regarding their processing and uses .

The auxiliary areas of the basement comprise of a room with a seating capacity for 40 people, equipped with audio-visual facilities, for video presentations on subjects related to the Museum and for special events of scientific interest; and, a multipurpose room for training courses , special exhibits , etc.
